Here's an image from the most recent shoot I did last Sunday. Thanks to Brittany Wilhelm for shopping for the clothes and being in the photograph and Max Martin for providing his cat and assisting the shoot. Another huge thanks to the generous people at Restwell Motel in Farmington for allowing us to take over a room and completely rearrange it. I greatly appreciate the help everyone!

House of 1817: The Movie

Well ladies and gentlemen, snowboarding season is just around the corner! I can't wait. I feel like posting a snowboard flick that has been getting me excited for the season. I'm a little late. It's already been up online for a few days now, but here it is anyway. House of 1817: The Movie. Enjoy.

120 Film

I was just browsing through some of my older photographs and decided to post a couple photos I made with a Hasselblad medium format camera back in my large format class, which seems like forever ago now. Strange how time flies. Anyway, these photos are from an abandoned WWII ammunition plant in Rosemount, formerly known as the Gopher Ordnance Plant. The history is actually quite interesting. If you have some time to spare, look it up on Google.

Oh, that's just Steve watering his garden.

I had to do a nude portrait for my location class. I knew I wanted to do something bizarre, so I figured why not photograph my nudist neighbor watering the garden with his chickens scrounging around? As I approached his backyard the morning of the shoot, I was quite surprised with the effort to block off as much of the neighbors vision as possible. There was a full-size tent set up, equipped with tarps blocking all 3 sides, except the side I was to shoot from. We also had a blanket covering an opening in the bushes at camera right. It was pretty chaotic trying to work with the chickens. Of course, they weren't very cooperative. As a result, I had to mask in 5 or 6 photographs in Photoshop in order to get everything how I wanted in the frame. Thanks to Steve, Jonathan, and Kristina for all their effort. A special thanks to Jonathan and Kristina for chasing the chickens around the whole time... and of course, Steve, for being in the photograph.

Sadly, this was the roosters' last photograph... it was their time to be made into dinner. WARNING: Do not look at the next couple images if you are a vegetarian.

Mellow Moments in the City

Thanks to Sidney Nambanji for being in the photograph and Tyler Pomroy for helping set up. A special thanks to First Ave. for allowing our whole class to take over their building.

Skateboarding

Bryan cruising through a tunnel in Eagan.

Chase hopping a rail in Mendota Heights.

Tim never completely rode away from this fs blunt, but it's still my favorite.

Here's Chase again with a pretty descent axle stall in St. Paul.

Tim makes everything look good. It's hard to go wrong photographing his skating.

Chase riding a wall from a sketchy quarter pipe some kids made at an abandoned WWII base.

Here's a diptych of Cody playing around at the abandoned mini golf course right by Zombie.

Nice Ride

We documented the opening of Nice Ride last Thursday, June 10, 2010. Basically, it is an effort to save energy and prevent pollution by having up to 1,000 bikes acting as taxi cabs around the downtown, uptown, and U of M areas. For the opening day, dozens of people rode the bikes down Nicollet Avenue from the Minneapolis Central Library to Peavey Plaza, where Mayor R.T. Rybak spoke to the public. Below is a photograph of the bikers crossing the intersection of Nicollet and 4th, shot from the sixth floor of a parking garage.

City Hall

I have always been fascinated by the outside of the Minneapolis City Hall; it looks like a castle amongst all the other buildings. I had passed the city hall hundreds of times on the light rail and was always curious what it looked like on the inside. Sure enough, we had an assignment where we had to document the architecture and design work of the building. The place is quite fascinating, a little on the eerie side in some areas too. Here are some of my favorite photos from that day.

Farmington Barber & Beauty

I would like to thank the owner, Doug Klemenhagen, for being so kind and allowing me to invade his space with my photo equipment. I had a lot of fun on this shoot. The people were all very nice. If you're in the area and could use a haircut, check the place out at 324 3rd Street Downtown Farmington.

    Enjoy the photos :)

The barber business ran through Doug's family. In the upper left corner is a photograph of Doug (owner) getting his haircut by his father when he was a kid.

Here is the customer with his fresh haircut.

Get In Gear

This last Saturday, April 24, Get In Gear celebrated their 33rd year of the 10k, 5k, 2k, and half marathon races held at Minnehaha Park. This event holds the largest 10k in Minnesota and is among the top 15 of the country. My class and I were to document the races for our assignment in Editorial. It rained the whole time we were there. I had my rain coat, a garbage bag around my backpack, and a Cub Foods bag around my camera; luckily my friend had an extra camera bag for me to use otherwise my camera would have been screwed. I learned a lesson and finally bought a legitimate camera bag with a rain cover after ruining a book and some papers from moisture. I had fun though; it was a good experience even though it's not my style of shooting. This is my favorite photo I came up with... I find it kind of funny.

Flour Me Gold

This is actually an old photograph, but it remains a personal favorite of mine. This was shot in the Dowling Studio at the Guthrie Theater about four quarters ago. If you haven't been there, I highly recommend checking it out. The design and layout of the building is worth a visit on its own and they present some of the greatest plays, which I have yet to experience myself.
